Gloss Restorer™ XL — Identifying An Acceptable Substrate

Why Is The Substrate Important?

Gloss Restorer™ XL is a new technology, and a new category of product. As a result, the conditions for its use differ as well. Those conditions include:

• The existence of previously applied sealer. Gloss Restorer™ XL works in concert with that sealer to chemically alter and bond to it.
• The ambient air and substrate temperature must be 60°F (16°C) in order to provide sufficient energy for that chemical process to occur.
• The existing sealer must not be damaged. Examples of damage include blushing, whitening, flaking, or peeling.
• The existing sealer must remain well bonded to the substrate.

Gloss Restorer™ XL is not designed to repair damaged sealers.

Identifying Acceptable Substrates

There are two methods to determine if a substrate is an acceptable surface for Gloss Restorer™ XL:

Method 1: Pour 4 to 8 fluid ounces of tap water onto the surface and observe if it beads.

Water Beads — Acceptable Surface

Water Absorbs — Unacceptable Surface

Identifying Acceptable Substrates

Method 2: Drop a small amount of household vinegar or dilute muriatic acid (diluted 9 parts water to 1 part acid) onto the substrate. Bubbling indicates a lack of existing sealer and an unacceptable substrate for use of Gloss Restorer™ XL

Vinegar Doesn't Bubble — Acceptable Surface

Vinegar Bubbles — Unacceptable Surface

Identifying Acceptable Substrates

If your substrate surface is absorptive of water and/or bubbles when exposed to vinegar or dilute muriatic acid, then Gloss Restorer™ XL should NOT be applied.

In these cases, please consider using a high gloss, solvent-based sealer designed specifically for decorative concrete, such as ChemMasters Crystal Clear, Traz 25, and Polyseal (alternative solvent, or "A" versions for low-VOC states).

Identifying Acceptable Substrates

Some substrates will have adequate sealer, but the sealer is damaged and will require a xylene wipe-down prior to applying Gloss Restorer™ XL.

Damage includes blushing, whitening, flaking or peeling.

Applying Gloss Restorer™ XL

If you have an acceptable substrate, take a few minutes to thoroughly read the detailed directions for use attached to every pail of Gloss Restorer™ XL. They include:

Surface Preparation — Cleaning the substrate surface.

Necessary Tools — Roller, roller cage, & metal paint pan or pump-up Chapin style sprayer.

Temperature — Surface & ambient temperature above 60°F (16°C) and at least 5°F above the dew point.

Application Tips

Do not over apply. More is not better.

Do not allow material to puddle.

Material will tend to puddle in deeply recessed faux joints in stamped concrete. Clean those joints section by section, using a foam painters brush or sponge to absorb excess product.

Gloss Restorer™ XL requires 24 hours at 70°F (21°C) to achieve maximum water resistance.

Curing

Early exposure to rain can cause temporary whitening. Do not panic! This phenomena disappears when the rain water evaporates.

Do not apply when rain or fog are forecast.
